The Northern
Ireland page remains but will probably not been
updated. As the Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry
(SCLI) became the Light Infantry (LI) on the 10 July
1968 just before doing a tour in Northern
Ireland.
But for the information it
already contains it was decided not to totally remove
the content from this site. As it was felt that it may
useful for people doing research on the Light Infantry
in Northern Ireland. |

Review by Richard Holmes
The real merit of the British
infantry across the centuries has been to preserve qualities when
organisations change, for change they must in a world where few
things are constant. But none of this stopped me having to blink
rather hard when I saw the photograph of Colonel Williams leading
his troops out of the depot at Bodmin for the last time. |

For some, the first time they have met in 48
years.
left to right, Roger Taplin, Reg Horn, Tony Hood,
Brian Aldridge,
Roger Chillcott
Tony Hood writes:
Hi Keith, five of us met up in Gloucester, unfortunately
Gordie West, Alan Durston and Nigel Dear could
not manage a mid week meeting, we had a good time
(and more than a few laughs recounting our old
lives in Training at Bodmin) amongst other things
we took a stroll around the Glorious Glosters
Museum, which had a ferret car on display and
could not resist a photo posing in front of it.
It struck me that you might like to display a
gallery on your web page under the banner ' 62nd
Draft Nat. Ser. Bodmin 1960'. Brian Aldridge and
I are still actively trying to locate more ex
SCLI now that we all got our heads together and
have some new names and addresses to go thru'
so hopefully we may be able to enlarge the group
in the near future. Roger Taplin, Roger Chillcott,
Alan Durston and Gordie West have all agreed to
attend the next Reunion at Taunton.

A message from Keith (webmaster)
A possible Gibraltar Trip
Can you please Email
Keith to tell me if you would be interested
at all in a veterans trip to Gibraltar to include
your wife or partner, in the spring of 2009. It
would initially be for veterans who served in
Gib for SCLI but then thrown open to others.
Accommodation would be at the Retreat
and at very reasonable cost, at this stage I am
just judging the interest.

HELP for HEROES
My thanks to all that contributed to the Help
for Heroes by buying a wrist band and thereby
donating money to this very worthwhile cause,
special thanks to those that contributed over
the recommended asking price. I had hoped to sell
a minimum of 100 wristbands but it was very difficult
to speak to everyone, as it was I managed to 'sell'
around forty and raised £197.- Tony Hood.

While chatting to Eric Herrington recently
he gave me this picture of these four
veterans of SCLI. The interesting thing
is that Lieut Col Ray Hall and Lieut Col
Eric Herrington achieved the highest QM
rank possible along it must be remembered
with Lieut Col. Tom Meredith (all Quartermasters)
For a full list of promotions from the
ranks go to Commissioned
from the Ranks this webpage was the
suggestion of Major General Barry Lane
who expressed a wish that these soldiers
should be applauded.

This is another very interesting picture
taken in 1959 just prior to the merger
of infantry regiments. Sgt Eric Herrington
as he was then was picked to go to Wellington
Barracks and represent The Somerset Light
Infantry, he can be clearly seen on the
enlargement on the right, WHY - because
of his sash, look closely. Eric tells
me he was challenged about his sash and
he had to enlighten the organisers of
the SomLI history and was prepared to
stick it out at all odds under pressure.

The Somerset &
Cornwall Light Infantry (SCLI) - (13th, 32nd & 46th Foot)
The regiment was formed on 6th October 1959,
by the amalgamation of The Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's)
and the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Immediately before
amalgamation the 1st Battalions of these regiments were stationed
at Warminster and Osnabruck respectively.
The 1st Battalion The Somerset and Cornwall Light
Infantry served at Osnabruck until June 1961, when it moved, by
way of Plymouth to Gibraltar. It is interesting to note that as
Barrymore's (13th) Foot and Fox's Marines, the two parent regiments
first met (and shared the same battle honour) at Gibraltar. Gibraltar
Day is now celebrated annually on 6th October as the Regimental
Day of Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry. The old Regimental
Days of Jellalabad, Lucknow and Paardeburg are still remembered,
with short histories published in Battalion Orders.
Among the distinctions brought from its parent
regiments, the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry has the Royal
Blue Facings and Royal Bugle Cords of the Somerset Light Infantry,
the red patch commemorating the red feathers of the Light Company
of the 46th Foot (later the 2nd Battalion the Duke of Cornwall's
Light Infantry) and the privilege of wearing the sash knotted
on the right side ,a unique distinction usually associated with
the gallantry of the 13th Foot at Culloden. The green head-dress,
whistle cord and No 1 Dress Uniform are common to all Light Infantry
Regiments. The parent Regiments were raised: in 1685 as Huntingdon's
Foot (now The Somerset Light Infantry), in 1702, as Fox's Marines,
and in 1740 as the 57th (later renumbered 46th)(1st and 2nd Battalions
The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry). Their names remain the
names of the two Territorial Army Battalions.
The 1st Battalion received Colours in May 1962
whilst stationed in Gibraltar, the Colours being presented on
behalf of Her Majesty The Queen by Field Marshal The Lord Harding
of Petherton. The 1st Battalion served in West Berlin, Gravesend
and Aden before becoming part of the new Regiment in 1968.
In 1968.07.10 1st Battalion, The Light Infantry
redesignated upon formation of "large" regiment from Light Infantry
Brigade.
