Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry

On a Charge !

by Peter Slade

Interesting anecdote.

When I was in Germany, a new intake arrived, and one of the lads was on a charge for something or other and had to go before Major Mathews who he had not met before. The Provost Sergeant and I had to march him in, but before they did the Provost Sgt. said to the lad "the Major is not a bad old stick, he'll shout a bit but if he winks at you you'll know you're on safe ground" so they marched him in " Lef Ri, Lef Ri, Lef Ri, Halt.

Major Mathews starts berating this chap and of course his blood pressure starts to go up and his eye starts twitching, anyway this idiot winks back at him. The Major goes absolutely mad and gives the chap 7 days CB for the original offence and another 7 days CB for impersonating an Officer.
The Provost Sgt and I came out creased up laughing, not so funny for the poor Pte. NS man.
